Circus Papi Kuko @ "De Player" Rotterdam

My 'Circus Papi Kuko' debut at De Player, Rotterdam.

A series of Papi Kuko Events were arranged by Wes Westenburger as part of his Graduation work. Fliers for these events where available in Wes's exhibit at the WdKA graduation show in "Las Palmas".
The Papi Kuko Event was kicked off by the new addition to the Kuko roster, 'Duncan the strongest man in Mansfield'. Where I was fitted with a harness and dragged a VW and six members of 'Circus Papi Kuko' down the road in front of De Player, an arts/performance club in Katendrecht.

For the event I made a special costume including a convincing weightlifting belt made from a second-hand ladies handbag.

Robot King

My submission at the degree show was a man sized, aluminium, freestanding, puppet built to resemble various robots from film and TV. Elements such as colours, shapes and styles where borrowed from robots such as: Transformers, Maria from Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the Power-Loader from Aliens (used to kill the alien Queen)

'Robot King' was also used in a series of short videos (three of which were shown alongside the sculpture). 14 positionable armatures in Robot King's joints allow versitile animation posibilities including a fight scene in a real life boxing ring.

WUNDERKAMMER

My animation "Vader Van het Bos" was one of the videos shown at the WUNDERKAMMER, West End Arcade, Nottingham. The exhibition was BRILL!

Pipe Dream

Part of the Tether Festival, Pipe dream is a collection of art which lends focus to the artist fantasy. The "Exhibition in Progress" presents work amidst a transient state where completion is not necessarily achieved presently.

My work extends from the Prototype show a development of the Particle accelerator idea, this time hinting at the furthest equatorial point from the earths core, Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador. I now suggest that this is the fastest place on earth and may already be travelling close to the speed of light.



















All that's left to be done now is erect a tower at the peak which should then have the greatest warp factor ever for a stationary object on earth. Should someone climb this tower they would indeed be transported gradually into the future.

Prototype, Tether studios

This exhibition, by NTU Fine Art students, became the warm up act for Tether Studios' premier festival. The principle behind the Prototype exhibition was self explanatory. Work on show was at a stage of development or based around the idea of a prototype in terms of invention and creativity.

I contributed a deign for a Particle Accelerator that assumes that a tower of unlimited height would not slow down the speed at which the earth revolves.
























Three canvas's that offer riddles and mathematical problems try to lead the viewer to the conclusion that a the tip of a tower built to certain specifications could exceed the speed of light, something scientists are unable to do with current technology.

Rationally there are fundamental flaws that stop this tower from existing but supposing we approach those existing theories with an open mind we have a particle accelerator suitable for the exploration of Einstein's 'Special theory of relativity' (and potentially time travel).

De Belofte @ Pa//////kt

De Belofte @ Pa////kt, Amsterdam

Eduard Douwes Dekker (AKA The Freedom Force and The Freedom Force on tour) was a group collaboration organised by Reinhaardt van Hoe in response to a request from PA//////KT (an exhibition space / Gallery) in Amsterdam to select the “Most Talented” student to represent the Academie / University.

Eduard Douwes Dekker consisted of Eric Roulen and Magreet van der Helm. The also included an outside group “Salon Rotte” (AKA Eddie and Jessica) who where not to make work but add conventions, such as “you have to present from our bureau (writing desk)” which I took from Salon Rotte to the PA//////KT space in a van.

Eduard Douwes Dekker used the Exhibition space as a studio space for one month then put the bureau and all of the art back into the van and toured for two days as a miniature portable exhibition. (*I drove!)

Eduard Douwes Dekker was in fact one of the first campaigners for fair trade. When he discovered corruption in the coffee industry he wrote the significant book Max Havelaar (then one of the common brands of coffee) under the pseudonym Multatuli.

Among the work we produced was a series of specifically sun damaged sheets of A4 paper, plans and imaginary reconstructions of the cabinet (courtesy of Eric), a home for 2 live baby chicks, dead and dieing plants and animals (courtesy of Magreet) a series of strange communications including taped messages, diaries and emails. My work continued my exploration into masculine identity. I produced series of lectures about art, jewellery made out of dried rose petals and exhibited work of other students from Nottingham Trent University (Ash Gallant and Lizzy Guy)
(This was a useful transitional period for me as I was still making my delicate feminine crafts and moving into the portrayal of a professor/scientist or HERO…)

“Please, look like a tourist” @ M.Oordt, Rotterdam

Group exhibition by WdKA-students at m.oordt (January 19 – 27, 2007)
Duncan Allen, Patrick Anthofer, Jan Brandt, Eléonore Cheynet, Tomoko Okada, Leo Peschta, Doris Prlic and Kjersti Vetterstad are students at WdKA’s Fine Art Department.
M.Oordt was a temporary exhibition space in Rotterdam Zuid and for several months was home to variety of exciting, self-curated projects.

OPPORTUNITY (Concept piece)
When asked to respond to lectures highlighting the “problems” caused by fluctuating economics, I refused to think in terms of negativity and used a pleasant idiom, which puts a positive spin on this imperfect situation.

“A problem is an opportunity in disguise”

I have chosen locations that draw the eye (like signs, public consumption) and hidden the word ‘opportunity’ so it can only be seen due to its protrusion. I cast this word from candy letters, for me this represents how societies consume opportunities, we avoid work where possible, we can talk about a problem, yet we are unable to do anything that resolves it.
